Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team will close out the fall portion of its schedule when it makes the short trip to Rock Hill, S.C., to play in the Winthrop Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
Upstate is making its first appearance in the Winthrop Invitational and is one of nine teams in the field. The Spartans will battle Appalachian State, Bethune-Cookman, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, Queens (N.C.), Savannah State, Winthrop and Wofford in the field. Five of the teams in the tournament are ranked in the middle of the pack in the NCAA, while Queens is ranked No. 44 in NCAA Division II in the latest Golfstat ranking.
The Winthrop Invitational is the fifth and final tournament of the fall for the Spartans and Upstate would like to end the fall season on a positive note. The Spartans are coming off a 6th-place effort at the Terrier Intercollegiate Oct. 20-21. Rachel Reiling led the way with a 6th-place individual effort as the Spartans turned in rounds of 323 and 333. Sidney Dermody and Payton Culler finished 22nd and tied for 23rd, respectively, to give the Spartans three players in the Top 25 on the individual leaderboard.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send a brand new lineup into action this weekend when regulars Rachel Reiling, Sidney Dermody, Payton Culler and Allea Hawkins are joined by Kinsey Soniat. Allie Gennaula is playing as an individual in the tournament. The Spartans are averaging 318.3 per round, which is on pace to break the program's single-season record for stroke average (322.0, 2012-13). It is also the second-lowest stroke average in the fall semester, just 1.5 strokes behind the 2012-13 squad, which turned in a 316.8 average in 2012.
Reiling and Dermody have paced the Spartans at the top of the lineup. Both average in the 70's with Dermody topping the unit with a 77.3 average and Reiling coming in at 78.6.
