Spartanburg, S.C. – Nearly a month after opening the season at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate, the USC Upstate women's golf team will return to the course to play in the CSU Wendy's Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern at the Rivertowne Country Club Oct. 6-7.
Upstate is one of nine teams in the field that will play 54 holes with 36 played on Monday and the final round played on Tuesday. Rivertowne Country Club plays at 5,956 yards and is a par-72 layout. This will be the third time Upstate has played in the tournament.
Joining Upstate and host Charleston Southern in the tournament are Bethune-Cookman, The Citadel, College of Charleston, GRU Augusta, Longwood, Presbyterian and Tennessee Tech. GRU-Augusta (No. 29), College of Charleston (No. 62) and Charleston Southern (No. 83) are all ranked in the Top 100 in the nation in the latest Golfweek rankings.
Upstate opened the season at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate and claimed a tie for fourth in the tournament after turning in rounds of 298 and 315. The 298 in the first round was notable because all five players in the lineup shot rounds in the 70's. It marked just the fourth time in the history of the program that all five players shot in the 70's and the seventh time in program history that the four countable scores were in the 70's. Malika Allie turned in one of the best efforts of her career, finishing in the Top 20 with rounds of 74 and 77.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Allie, Payton Culler, Sidney Dermody, Allea Hawkins and Rachel Reiling into action this week. It is the same lineup that suited up for the Great Smokies Intercollegiate and is averaging 306.5 per round.
