Charleston, S.C. – Playing in just the second tournament of her collegiate career, USC Upstate freshman Sidney Dermody led the Spartan women's golf team in the first day of the CSU Wendy's Invitational at Rivertowne Country Club Monday, standing tied for fifth heading into Tuesday's final round.
Dermody turned in back-to-back rounds of 74 to stand tied for fifth with a 4-over 148 total as the teams played two rounds on Monday. She is just four shots back of the lead, held by College of Charleston's Laura Fuenfstueck at even-par. Dermody was a birdie machine Monday, recording five in the first round and three in the second.
"I am extremely impressed with Sidney," said Upstate assistant coach Audrey Church. "Not only did she lead us as a freshman, she stayed steady all day and maintained her composure throughout the entire day."
Upstate made 22 birdies on the day, an average of 11 per round, and shot rounds of 321 and 323 to stand sixth with a 644 total. College of Charleston leads with a 584 total and is followed on the leaderboard by Charleston Southern (597), Bethune-Cookman (607), Tennessee Tech (611), Longwood (619), Upstate (644), Presbyterian (645) and The Citadel (702) heading into Tuesday's final round.
"We rolled in quite a few birdie putts today which gave us some good opportunities to put up solid scores," said Church. "Unfortunately, we followed them up with too many big numbers. We found trouble on the course too many times."
Dermody led the Spartans in the first round Monday morning, carding a career-best 2-over 74 in her third collegiate round. She played the front nine at 1-under and the back nine at 3-over with two birdies. Rachel Reiling also finished in the 70's, shooting a 79 with three birdies in her round. Malika Allie turned in an 82 and Payton Culler added an 86 for the fourth countable score. The Spartans made 10 birdies in the round, five alone by Dermody.
Dermomdy again led the Upstate cause in the second round. She made three birdies en route to her second consecutive 74. The Spartans also counted scores of 80 from Allea Hawkins, 84 from Reiling and 85 from both Allie and Culler. The Spartans made 12 birdies in the round.
