Spartanburg, S.C. – As conference standings begin to take shape, the USC Upstate women's soccer team takes to the road for two pivotal league matchups beginning Friday at 7 p.m. at North Florida and concluding Sunday at 2 p.m. at Jacksonville.
The Spartans have earned one point in the conference standings after posting a 1-1 draw earlier in the year against Northern Kentucky and are still in play for a conference tournament berth with four league games remaining.
Upstate enters the weekend coming off one of its best offensive performances of the season, as the Spartans scored two goals Sunday against Stetson. Sophomore Rachel Baylor was responsible for both goals and turned in her first multi-goal game in an Upstate uniform. The Greensboro, N.C., native enters play second on the team with five points.
Junior Kenzie Major picked up the assist on Baylor's first goal against the Hatters and moved into first place all-time at Upstate during the Division I era with 17 career points. Major currently stands tied for third in the Atlantic Sun with five goals and ranks fifth with 11 points.
North Florida owns a 3-9-1 overall record and a 1-1-1 mark in league play, but enters the weekend having won two of its last three games. The Ospreys snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 overtime victory over Davidson (Sept. 28) before defeating Northern Kentucky 2-1 (Oct. 5) two games later for its first conference win.
Freshman forward Kayla Gray leads North Florida with seven points on three goals and one assist, while senior midfielder Jill Holdsworth paces the team with four assists.
Jacksonville suffered its first conference loss of the season last time out when the Dolphins fell 1-0 at Lipscomb. Despite the setback, Jacksonville boasts an 8-5-1 overall record and a 2-1-0 record inside the league.
Senior forward Kaitlyn Bassett has a team-high 10 points on four goals and two assists to lead the Dolphins. Freshman Sope Akindoju ranks second on the team with nine points on three goals and three assists.
