Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team finishes its regular season this weekend as the Spartans travel north to face Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky in a pair of A-Sun matches.
Upstate opens the weekend Friday night at 6:30 p.m. against Lipscomb and then heads to Northern Kentucky Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. match.
The Spartans are 10-18 overall this season after dropping two contests last weekend at Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
Upstate received double-doubles each from Kayla Eversgerd and Lexi Gober in the Stetson match, giving them both a team-high 15 on the season. Eversgerd had a match-high 11 kills against the Hatters to go with 16 digs, while Gober added 30 assists and 10 digs.
The Spartans are led by Eversgerd with 288 kills and 358 digs to rank tenth and seventh in the A-Sun. Four other Upstate players also have triple-digit kills in Kayla McAvoy (266), Shannon Weiss (234), Emily Koelling (234) and Alexa Lagaly (149). Gober is just 65 assists away from 1,000 on the season as she sits at 935 while leading the A-Sun in service aces with 38. Weiss is just one service ace behind Gober in second. Koelling has a team-high 63 total blocks.
Eversgerd is close to reaching a career milestone for the Spartans. The junior is 16 digs and 19 kills away from having 1,000 each in her career. Eversgerd would become just the sixth player in program history to accomplish the feat and first for Upstate since joining Division I. The last Spartan to reach that mark was Mandy Rupert (2003-06).
Lipscomb currently sits in first place in the A-Sun standings with an 11-1 conference record and is 18-7 overall. The Bisons are led by 11th-year head coach Brandon Rosenthal, who is 216-150 during his tenure. Lipscomb leads the all-time series over Upstate 11-0 after defeating the Spartans 3-0 in Spartanburg on Oct. 3.
Northern Kentucky is one of three teams tied for fourth in the conference standings with a 5-7 record while holding a 16-10 overall mark. The Norse are coached by Liz Hart, who is in her fourth overall season with the program. She has a career coaching record of 93-50. Northern Kentucky holds a 5-0 lead in the all-time series against Upstate as it won 3-1 at the Hodge Center on Oct. 4.
