Weiss Receives Academic All-Conference Honors

Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate junior right side Shannon Weiss was one of nine student-athletes to be named to the Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference Team, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Weiss becomes the second Upstate volleyball player in program history to be named Academic All-Conference by the A-Sun. The last Spartan to be placed on the team was Kelsie Queen in 2011.
"Shannon has worked tirelessly on the court, but more importantly, she is goal-driven and academically focused toward her life goal; the field of nursing," said head coach Jennifer Calloway. "She has a brilliant mind and a caring heart. She is highly intelligent and will let nothing get in her way."
Weiss was second on the team in service aces, third in kills and fourth in digs for the Spartans this season after starting in all 27 matches that she appeared in. The junior compiled 235 kills, 281 digs and 38 service aces, all of which are career-highs for her. The 38 service aces ranked her tied for second in the conference behind teammate Lexi Gober. She was also third on the team with nine double-doubles, and had ten matches with double-digit kills and 15 with 10 or more digs. Weiss was selected to the Wingate Invitational All-Tournament Team earlier this season.
The Highland, Ill. native currently holds a 3.892 grade-point average and is seeking a degree in nursing with a minor in child advocacy studies.
"She has been blessed with many talents," added Calloway. "I love seeing her use those to the fullest and now be rewarded from our conference for her hard work, especially this year."
Lipscomb's Lauren Ford was named the A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Academic All-Conference Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom and exemplify the A-Sun's mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
