Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team put together a solid showing over the weekend at the Terrier Intercollegiate from the Reeves Tennis Complex in the final tournament of the fall season.
Freshman Nona Ruppert was a perfect 2-0 in singles play, opening the tournament with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Sabina Jeresic of Arkansas State Friday afternoon in the Wofford bracket. Ruppert also turned in a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Nicole Nielly of Western Carolina Sunday to qualify for the finals. Due to inclement weather on Saturday that pushed all singles competition back one day, the semifinals were moved to Sunday and the finals were not played.
Fellow freshman Nina Roell posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jess Heeps-Eriksen of Arkansas State Friday in her first match in the SoCon bracket, but was defeated 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 by Carolina deLoach of Presbyterian Sunday in the semifinals.
Sharlee Deshmukh suffered a 6-0, 6-2 setback to Daria Vasekina of Georgia Southern in the opening round of the College bracket on Friday before falling 6-0, 6-0 to Mary Walker Mixon of Garder-Webb Sunday in the consolation bracket.
In doubles play, Ruppert and Roell were defeated 8-1 by Shannon Bettiol and Elizabeth Ansari of Western Carolina in the Black bracket Friday in the opening round. The duo dropped an 8-3 decision to Giulia Riepe and Francisca Norregaard of Georgia Southern Saturday in the consolation round, but answered with an 8-3 victory over Yvonne Kamegne and Mafalda Lhorca of Norfolk State to secure fourth place.
Deshmukh, playing alongside Daria Iurchenko of Arkansas State, lost 8-6 to Amalie Davidsen and Caroline Sherrer of UNC Asheville Friday in the first round of the Gray bracket, but posted an 8-2 win over Dominique Bruce and Lucy Stofberg of Lenoir-Rhyne in the consolation bracket to win the title and take third place.
Upstate opens its spring schedule Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Greenville, S.C., to battle Furman.
