Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team begins its season-ending four-match road trip this weekend when it travels down to face Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson in A-Sun play.
Upstate heads to Florida Gulf Coast for a 5 p.m. match Saturday evening and then travels up to Stetson Sunday to face the Hatters at 1:30 p.m.
The Spartans come into the weekend with a 10-16 overall record and are 1-9 in the A-Sun after picking up their first win of the season last Friday against North Florida.
In the five-set win over UNF, Upstate received double-doubles from the trio of Lexi Gober, Kayla McAvoy and Kayla Eversgerd. Gober and Eversgerd were joined the following day as Shannon Weiss and Emily Koelling also had double-doubles as the Spartans fell in five sets to Jacksonville. Eversgerd and Gober both have 14 double-doubles on the season to lead the team, while McAvoy and Koelling collected their first. The double-double by Weiss was her ninth of the year.
Eversgerd leads Upstate with 269 kills and 332 digs this season, which ranks her tenth and sixth in the conference. The junior is one of five Spartans with triple digit kills along with McAvoy (248), Weiss (223), Koelling (165) and Alexa Lagaly (145). Gober has dished out a team-high 878 assists to go with 38 service aces to lead the conference, and rank 21st nationally, in that category. She is just one service ace away from 100 in her career. Gober also needs just seven digs for 300 on the season and Kaleigh Kelley is at 298. Koelling is first on the team in blocks with 61 (18 solo, 43 assisted).
Florida Gulf Coast is second in the A-Sun with an 8-2 record and has an overall record of 15-9. The Eagles are led by first-year head coach Matt Botsford. FGCU leads the all-time series over Upstate 11-0 after defeating the Spartans 3-0 in Spartanburg on Oct. 10.
The Hatters are tied for third in the conference standings with an even 5-5 record, while sitting at 14-10 on the year. Stetson is under the direction of first-year head coach Kristina Hernandez. She has a career record of 156-194 in 11 seasons as a head coach. Upstate holds a 7-5 lead in the series, but the Hatters were victorious in the first meeting this season, 3-2, on Oct. 11 at the Hodge Center.
