NSCAA Southeast All-Region Teams
Spartanburg, S.C. – In what has already been a career year filled with a plethora of individual honors, USC Upstate standout midfielder Marvin Schmiege has been named a second team all-region selection in the Southeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Schmiege, a junior from Berlin, Germany, is the first Upstate men's soccer player to earn all-region honors since the university transitioned its athletic program from NCAA Division II to Division I in 2007-08. He is also the first all-region honoree in the program since 2006. He is one of nine players from the A-Sun to earn all-region honors on either the first, second or third teams.
"Marvin continues to receive awards that reflect the quality of student-athlete he is," said Upstate head coach Greg Hooks. "He has been honored for his successes on the field and in the classroom. The all-region selection is a tremendous honor for him while it places him in an elite group of players competing at the highest level of college soccer. I am very proud of him for earning this distinction."
Schmiege has received a number of honors for his excellence on and off the soccer field in 2014. On the field, he was named the A-Sun Player of the Year and was a unanimous first team all-conference selection. He led the conference with nine goals and in goals per game, while ranking second with 20 points and in points per game. He also ranks among the nation's leaders in the Top 25 in both categories. His player of the year and first team all-conference honors this season follow a second team all-conference nod in 2013 as a sophomore.
As good as Schmiege has been on the field, he has been more impressive in the classroom. Armed with a perfect 4.0 GPA, he has earned several academic honors this season and throughout his career. He was named a Capital One Second Team Academic All-American after being named the A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer and an A-Sun Academic All-Conference honoree. He was a Capital One Academic All-District selection prior to earning Academic All-America honors. In addition, he is a two-time A-Sun All-Academic team member and was named an A-Sun Conference Scholar last spring.
Schmiege is the only player from the A-Sun to have earned Academic All-America honors. He is also just one of two men's soccer players from a school in South Carolina to earn the award. He is the 10th Spartan student-athlete to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors in the history of the program, the sixth since the school joined NCAA Division I and the fifth men's soccer player to take home the honor.
