Pinehurst, N.C. – Amanda Hall and Rachel Reiling each shot an 81 to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team in the first round of the Pinehurst Challenge Saturday on Pinehurst No. 1 at the Pinehurst Golf Resort. The first round was suspended because of darkness with two teams and groups of individual players still on the course.
Upstate shot a 333 and is 12th on the leaderboard with two teams, Bucknell and Siena, still on the course. Bucknell and Siena each had a player finish their rounds with a Bucknell player posting an 87 and a Siena player posting an 88. The other four players for each team still have to complete their rounds.
The first round will be completed Sunday morning with the final two rounds to be played Sunday as well. If darkness prevents the completion of the tournament, the teams will return Monday. The tournament was originally scheduled to be played Sunday and Monday, but rain that is supposed to move into the area Sunday caused the tournament to be moved up a day with Monday being a "rain day" for the remainder of the tournament.
The College of Charleston is the leader in the clubhouse with a 294 and is followed by Jacksonville State (303), High Point (310), Gardner-Webb (312), Boston U. (313), Middle Tennessee (314), Jacksonville (316), Western Michigan (318), SCAD Savannah (320), Appalachian State (323), Illinois State (325) and Upstate (333).
Upstate shot a 303 by counting the two rounds of 81 by Hall and Reling. Malika Allie Shot an 85 and Allea Hawkins shot an 86 for the four countable scores for the Spartans. Kinsey Soniat opened the tournament with a 92.
The College of Charleston's Morgan Webber opened with a 69 to take the lead among the players who finished the first round.
