Richmond, Ky. – Malika Allie battled at the top of the leaderboard all the way until the final hole of the round and finished second to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team in the final round of the Colonel Classic at the Arlington Golf Club. The Spartans finished ninth in the tournament.
Allie was tied for the tournament lead with two other players with three holes to play. However, Eastern Kentucky's Sofie Levin broke the three-way tie and won the individual championship. Allie, though, still finished with a career-best second place finish with rounds of 76 and 78 for a 154 total, finishing just two shots back of Levin.
"We were fortunate to have Mailka play a wonderful tournament," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "She was competing for a win to the very last hole and that is what we needed. As a team, it was a disappointing day when opportunities to score were there because of the improved weather."
Upstate finished with a 323 Saturday and a tournament total of 645 to finish ninth. The Spartans were battling for a fourth place finish, but finished in ninth just seven shots out of a top five finish.
EKU won the team championship with a 616 total and was followed by Morehead State (622), Xavier (628), Marshall (634), Ohio (638), Bowling Green State (643), Cleveland State (643), Akron (643), Upstate (645), Tennessee Tech (653), Cumberlands (654) and Bethel (658).
Allea Hawkins shaved six strokes off of her score from Friday and finished with an 80 Saturday as the second best score of the day for Upstate. She finished tied for 52nd with a 166 total. Amanda Hall carded an 81 Saturday and finished as the third-best Spartan in the tournament with 163 total and a tie for 37th. Rachel Reiling shot an 84 for the fourth countable score on the day for Upstate. She was the second-best Spartan in the tournament with a 162 total and in a tie for 34th. Kinsey Soniat shot a career-best 87 Saturday.
Upstate now turns its attention to a return to Jekyll Island April 14-16 for the A-Sun Championship.
