Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team welcomes regional foes High Point, South Carolina State and Gardner-Webb to County University Stadium for the annual Border Classic Tournament that begins Friday at 5 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 3 p.m.
South Carolina State will face Gardner-Webb Friday in the opening game of the event, while Upstate will host High Point thereafter at 7:30 p.m. Competition on Sunday begins at 12 p.m. with High Point facing South Carolina State and concludes with Upstate hosting Gardner-Webb.
Upstate turned in an impressive showing in last year's Border Classic Tournament, earning a 1-0-1 record en route to posting shutouts against both South Carolina State and Gardner-Webb. Spartan forward Rachel Baylor scored a goal in the 82nd minute in the final game of the tournament to give Upstate a 1-0 victory over Gardner-Webb.
Last weekend, Upstate picked up its first win of the season following an impressive 4-1 victory at South Carolina State. Junior Kenzie Major scored all four goals to become the second player in school history and first in the Division I era to net four goals in a single game. In addition, Major is currently one of four players in the NCAA with four goals in a game this season.
Major enters the weekend ranked second in the Atlantic Sun in goals (4) and points (8) and stands tied for first in shots (16).
"This is a great event and we are excited to be a part of it for the second straight year," USC Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. "We're especially excited to be playing this tournament at home, but at the same time we realize that both games will be extremely tough and we'll need to play our best to produce the desired result."
High Point owns a 1-0-0 lead in the all-time series with Upstate following a 1-0 victory in 2008, while Gardner-Webb is 7-1-0 against Upstate in the all-time series that began in 2000.
