Waynesville, N.C. – Malika Allie led the USC Upstate women's golf team in the final round of the Great Smokies Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at the Waynesville Inn & Golf Club. She finished with a 77 to lead the Spartans to a round of 315, a tournament total of 613 and a tie for fourth place.
"We take a lot of positives away from this tournament and know that the game is played so close in the brain at this level," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "A few missed opportunities at the front end of our day really got us. As a team, we didn't convert birdies like yesterday and had to force confidence. That is difficult to do. We are a young team that is willing to work and the next couple of weeks will provide us a chance to do so."
Allie posted her second straight round in the 70's to lead the Upstate cause in the tournament. She finished with rounds of 74 and 77 for a 151 total, finishing in a tie for 17th place.
"Malika finished with a nice tournament to lead us," said Lawton. "Our overall tournament scores were good for our first tournament of the year."
Western Carolina shot a 285 Sunday and won the tournament with a 575 total. Western Kentucky was second at 582 and was followed by Mercer (584), Upstate (613), Presbyterian (613), Sandhills CC (644) and The Citadel (649). Western Carolina's Taylor Allison won medalist honors with a 140 total while playing as an individual.
Upstate freshman Sidney Dermody also posted two rounds of 70's in the tournament, shooting 78 Sunday after carding a 77 Saturday. She finished with a 155 total and in 21st. Allea Hawkins and Payton Culler turned in the third and fourth countable scores on the day, each turning in 80. Culler finished with a 153 total and in 20th place. Hawkins finished at 156 and claimed 22nd, while Rachel Reiling posted an 82 Sunday and a 157 total for a tie for 23rd.
Upstate will take a couple of weeks off before returning to the course at the Wendy's Charleston Invitational at the Rivertowne Country Club in Charleston, S.C.
