Spartanburg, S.C. – The 31st Annual Eye Opener Invitational came to a close Saturday morning as a total of six high school races were run at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg.
The event began Saturday morning with the International Girls Race at 8 a.m. followed by the International Boys at 8:30 a.m., Championship Girls at 9 a.m., Championship Boys at 9:30 a.m., Junior Varsity Girls at 10 a.m. and concluded with the Junior Varsity Boys at 10:30 a.m. Former 1976 Olympic runner Bill Rodgers, a four-time winner of both the New York and Boston Marathons, served as honorary starter for the races.
The USC Upstate cross country teams used Saturday as a day to give back to the Spartanburg area by volunteering as part of the program's commitment to community service. Helping in the running of the meet is just one of numerous community service projects organized by the Spartan cross country program each year. Annually, the Eye Opener Invitational is one of the largest cross country meets in the Southeast region.
Upstate kicked off the weekend last night by registering two top-5 finishes in the collegiate races with the men finishing third and the women fifth. Griffin Eubanks led the Spartans with a second-place finish in the men's race, while Jasmine Polite earned her second straight top-10 finish at the Eye Opener with a sixth-place showing.
