Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate cross country team heads to Charlottesville, Va. Friday afternoon for the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Virginia from Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.
The competition will get underway at 12 p.m. Friday with the running of the women's 6K race followed by the men's 10K event at 1 p.m. The race marks the first time this season the Upstate men have competed in a 10K event and second for the women in the 6K after running at the Wake Forest Invitational on Oct. 16.
The Spartans are returning to the course for the first time in two weeks on Friday as they ran at the A-Sun Cross Country Championships on Oct. 30 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Upstate men finished fourth overall and the women placed seventh.
Griffin Eubanks led Upstate individually with a fifth place finish and was named First Team All-Conference. Eubanks became the first Spartan men's runner since Gilbert Kemboi in 2012 to be named First Team All-Conference and third in program history to earn multiple All-Conference accolades along with Kemboi and Davey Dennison. Overall, the Upstate men logged three personal-best times from Theodore Kountourogiannis, Abraham Hernandez and Marcus Miles.
On the women's side, Ashleigh Torres turned in the top individual performance with a 35th place showing. Torres was one of two Spartan women to post personal-best times as she was joined by Haley McCoy.
At last year's NCAA Southeast Regional, the men finished in 25th place while Eubanks placed 89th, marking the fourth-best performance in program history at the Southeast Regional behind Kemboi and Cameron Thomas.
A total of 41 schools are slated to compete in Friday's races. The field will be made up of 620 runners from schools across the Southeast Region. Upstate is the only team from the A-Sun running in the meet.
Admission to the meet is free but there will be a $5 charge for parking.
