
Wild, Schwarzer Named to NSCAA All-Region Team

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate freshman forward Gordon Wild and sophomore midfielder Leon Schwarzer were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Wednesday as Wild was selected First Team All-Southeast Region and Schwarzer Third Team All-Southeast Region.
Wild and Schwarzer both played integral roles this season for Upstate as it made its first-ever appearance in the A-Sun Tournament Championship game. The Spartans finished the 2015 season with a 7-7-1 overall record and went 1-3-1 in conference play.
"I am proud of both Gordon and Leon for receiving these honors from the NSCAA," said Upstate head coach Greg Hooks. "Both players had outstanding seasons for us and are very deserving of this honor."
Wild, the A-Sun Freshman of the Year, led the nation in five offensive categories this season including goals per game, points per game, shots per game, shots on goal per game and total goals; while ranking third in total points. Wild was also named A-Sun First Team All-Conference, All-Freshman Team and All-Tournament Team. The forward was voted the A-Sun Player of the Week four times this year including three straight from Sept. 8-21, becoming just the second player in conference history, and first since 1995, to receive the recognition four times in a season. He was selected as the National Player of the Week by both College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer.
The Steimel, Germany native led the A-Sun this season in goals, points, shots and shots on goal. Wild finished the season with 16 goals, including three game-winners, and two assists for a total of 34 points. He set Upstate's Division I era record for career goals and points, as well as the Division I single-season record in both categories. Wild scored a Division I era record four goals for Upstate in a school record-breaking 7-0 win at Presbyterian College, marking the first time in 11 years a Spartan had scored four goals in a game. The four goals were also tied for seventh-most in a game in A-Sun history. He recorded his first career hat trick in a 5-4 home win over Winthrop.
Schwarzer was voted A-Sun First Team All-Conference and All-Tournament Team after starting in all 15 games this season in the midfield. The sophomore led the Spartans in assists with six, and ranked second in goals with nine and points with 24.
The Muenster, Germany native was second in the conference in assists and points, and tied for second in goals. Nationally, Schwarzer ranked 12th in points per game, 23rd in goals per game and 41st in assists per game.
Schwarzer was recognized academically this season as he was placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and A-Sun All-Academic Team.
