Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's cross country team has earned All-Academic Team accolades by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), it was announced recently.
The Spartans posted a team grade-point average of 3.33 during the fall semester and have received the award for the second time in program history. The Upstate men last received the award following the 2012 season.
"The guys have done a great job academically," said associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "We are proud of the success they are having in the classroom."
The Spartans took home the team championship at the College of Charleston Invitational this past season, capping off a year that saw them finish third or better three times. In consecutive meets, Upstate finished third at the Eye Opener Invitational in Spartanburg and second at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational in Rock Hill.
Junior Griffin Eubanks became the sixth Spartan to earn A-Sun All-Conference honors, joining the likes of Gilbert Kemboi, Davey Dennison, Christian Ritacco, Cameron Thomas and Ross Oden. Eubanks also recorded the fourth-best individual finish in program history at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Upstate was one of five men's teams from the A-Sun to receive the award along with Florida Gulf Coast, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb and North Florida.
Overall, 226 women's and 179 men's teams received All-Academic honors. Programs must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or greater to qualify for the award.
