Hilton Head Island, S.C. – USC Upstate shot a final round 335 and finished 11th at the Low Country Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at Moss Creek Plantation. The Spartans had to play the tournament with four players after No. 1 player Eden Howard fell ill prior to the start of the event and had to withdraw without starting play Saturday.
With Howard out of the lineup, there was no margin of error for the four Spartan golfers with each knowing their rounds would count toward the team score. Upstate counted scores of 80 from Rachel Reiling, 83 from Allea Hawkins, 85 from Payton Culler and 87 from Sidney Dermody to shoot 335. The Spartans finished the tournament with a 661 total.
Upstate began its round on the 10th hole and buoyed by two birdies from Dermody, played the back nine at 19-over. The front nine was clearly tougher. Payton Culler notched a birdie on the front, but the Spartans shot 28-over to shoot their 335.
Princeton and Wofford tied for first with a 618 total, but Princeton was declared the team champion under pre-determined tiebreaker procedures. SCAD-Savannah was third with a 621 total and was followed by High Point (626), Bethune-Cookman (627), Radford (635), Appalachian State (636), Indiana State (638), Gardner-Webb (638), Towson (652), Upstate (661), Navy (677), The Citadel (679), Presbyterian (680) and St. Francis-N.Y. (734). Princeton's Jordan Lippett and SCAD-Savannah's Sofia Molinaro tied for the individual championship with a 146 total.
