Spartanburg, S.C. – Capping a tremendous career in the classroom and on the course, USC Upstate's Rachel Reiling has been named the A-Sun's co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's golf.
Reiling, a senior who owns a perfect 4.0 GPA for her collegiate career, is the first Upstate women's golfer to earn a major individual award from the A-Sun. She will share Scholar Athlete of the Year honors with Jacksonville's Jessica Welch. Reiling and Welch were the only two unanimous selections to the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team.
"Rachel is a very deserving recipient of this award and I am extremely proud of her on and off the course," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "She is not only an academic leader, but a strong competitor who has represented Upstate women's golf very well during her career. It's not often you find a player so solid in both areas."
A Physical Education major with an emphasis in Exercise and Sport Science, Reiling has been a standout in the classroom her entire college career. She earned academic honors as a freshman at Adams State prior transferring to Upstate to begin her sophomore season. She is a two-time A-Sun All-Academic team selection and an A-Sun Conference Scholar for career academic achievement. She is also a two-time All-America Scholar honoree by the Women's Golf Coaches Association.
On the course, Reiling has turned in one of the top performances in program history. She ranks fourth all-time in rounds played despite being in the program for three seasons. She is also fifth all-time in career stroke average. She was the top Spartan in the recent A-Sun Championships, finishing tied for 23rd.
