Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate women's tennis head coach Oliver Trittenwein announced the 2016 spring schedule on Tuesday, which culminates with the Spartans hosting the Atlantic Sun Championships for the first time in school history.
"We are excited to be hosting the A-Sun Tournament for the first time in school history," Trittenwein said. "It's a great opportunity for our community to attend a great event and watch a very high level of collegiate tennis."
The Spartans open the season with a five-match road trip that will take Upstate to Furman (Jan. 23), Clemson (Jan. 24), ETSU (Jan. 30), Gardner-Webb (Feb. 5) and Davidson (Feb. 6). Upstate makes its home debut Feb. 9 when the Spartans host in-state rival Presbyterian from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate makes the quick trip across town to face Wofford (Feb. 12) before returning home for consecutive matches against Coastal Carolina (Feb. 14) and Campbell (Feb. 19). A second five-match road trip follows that pits the Spartans against Western Carolina (Feb. 24), UNC Greensboro (Feb. 27), College of Charleston (March 8), Charleston Southern (March 9) and Charlotte (March 19).
"When you have a team that is made up mostly of freshman, anything can happen," Trittenwein said. "The benefit of having a fall schedule like we have is that it will give our five newcomers an opportunity to face the same teams they will be competing against in the spring. We believe that will prepare our newcomers for what they will face in the spring."
The Spartans finish the non-conference schedule at home against Elon (March 23) before welcoming Stetson (March 24) and North Florida (March 26) for the beginning of A-Sun competition. Upstate heads back on the road to face Florida Gulf Coast (April 2) and Lipscomb (April 7) prior to Senior Day back home against Kennesaw State (April 9). The Spartans put the finishing touches on the regular season at NJIT (April 16).
"We believe the level of talent on our team will give us a great opportunity to compete against some of the top teams in our region and conference," Trittenwein added. "Our goal is to finish in the top half of the league and make the postseason tournament and compete on our home courts."
The A-Sun Tournament is scheduled for April 22-24 from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
