
Spartans Finish at Elon Invitational

Elon, N.C. – Sarah Vande Berg advanced to the quarterfinals of the oak singles flight to highlight competition for the USC Upstate women's tennis team over the weekend at the Elon Invitational.
Vande Berg defeated Finley of UNC Asheville 6-1, 6-2 before falling 6-2, 6-0 to McKenzie Barco of Chattanooga on Saturday.
Spartan freshman Carol Sigaki dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Xue Zhang in the maroon singles flight in her opening match on Friday. Sigaki went on to turn in a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Michelle Satterfield of Emory in the consolation bracket.
Felicia Ahlborg fell 6-2, 6-0 to Erin Maguire in the Powell singles flight and then lost 6-2, 6-4 to Jamie Rogers of North Carolina Central on the consolation side.
In doubles play, Sigaki and Ahlborg were beaten 8-6 in a match against Barco and Blair Martin of Furman in the Powell doubles flight. The duo, however, then posted a default victory over Rogers and Jasmine Gabriel of North Carolina Central.
Upstate returns to the courts Friday when the Spartans host the USC Upstate Fall Classic from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
