Macon, Ga. – On the heels of another outstanding stretch of games on the pitch, USC Upstate freshman phenom Gordon Wild has been selected as the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
Wild becomes the first student-athlete in over 23 years to be tabbed as the A-Sun Player of the Week in three consecutive weeks. In addition, Wild was also named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week.
"Gordon has obviously gotten off to a tremendous start in his college soccer career," USC Upstate head coach Greg Hooks said. "I am very pleased for Gordon as he is deserving of the accolades that he has received."
Wild scored five goals last week in leading Upstate to victories over Winthrop and Gardner-Webb. The Steimel, Germany, native currently leads the NCAA with 12 goals and 24 points and has scored at least two goals in four of his last five games.
Wild opened the week with three goals on Wednesday to help Upstate erase a two-goal deficit late in the second half en route to a 5-4 victory over Winthrop. Wild scored two goals with Upstate playing a man down after a Spartan defender was issued a red card just over two minutes before halftime.
The goal scoring continued on Saturday when Wild netted two goals, including the game-winner, to lift Upstate to a 3-2 win at Gardner-Webb. Wild scored his first goal in the 33rd minute and another on a free kick in the 62nd minute for his third such goal of the week.
Upstate returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. when Wild and the Spartans travel to Davidson, N.C., to face Davidson.
