Spartanburg, S.C. – Having won four of its last six non-conference matches, the USC Upstate men's soccer team looks to ride that momentum into the start of conference play Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Lipscomb from County University Soccer Stadium. The Spartans close the week Saturday at 7 p.m. on the road at Jacksonville.
Spartan freshman Gordon Wild continues to serve as the catalyst for an Upstate offense that ranks third in the nation with 2.86 goals per game. Individually, Wild leads the NCAA in goals (12) and points per game (3.43) and stands second in total points (24).
Teammate Leon Schwarzer stands second on the team and is tied for 12th in the NCAA with six goals, making him and Wild the highest scoring duo in the country with 18 combined goals. Schwarzer has also registered five assists and ranks sixth in the nation with 17 points.
Lipscomb enters the week having won just one of its last five matches and fell to 2-5-1 overall following a 1-0 loss at Mercer on Saturday. Freshman midfielder Logan Paynter leads the Bisons with six points on three goals, while sophomore Ivan Alvarado is second on the squad with five points on two goals and one assist.
Jacksonville begins A-Sun play Wednesday at Florida Gulf Coast before hosting the Spartans on Saturday. The Dolphins have lost five straight matches and have not won since posting a 3-1 victory Sept. 6 over Detroit.
