The USC Upstate cross country teams used Saturday as a day to give back to the Spartanburg area by volunteering as part of the program's commitment to community service. Helping in the running of the meet is just one of numerous community service projects organized by the Spartan cross country program each year. Annually, the Eye Opener Invitational is one of the largest cross country meets in the Southeast region.
Upstate kicked off the Eye Opener Invitational Friday evening by winning both the men's and women's races. The men captured the Eye Opener for the first time since 2013 while the women last won in 2009. Griffin Eubanks recorded his first career victory as a Spartan after winning the men's race and becoming just the third Upstate men's runner to finish first joining former Spartans Ross Oden and Gilbert Kemboi.
A total of 10 teams, including the Spartans, competed in the Eye Opener college races on Friday. The other nine teams were: Brevard, Converse (women only), Lenoir-Rhyne, Paine, SCAD Savannah, Spartanburg Methodist, Wofford and Young Harris College.
