
Spartans Have Successful Weekend at USC Upstate Invitational

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team finished in the top three in eight of nine flights this weekend at the USC Upstate Invitational held at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
The Spartans won flight two and flight three doubles and either finished or tied for second in flight one singles, flight two singles, flight six singles and flight one doubles. Upstate finished in third in flight three singles and flight five singles.
Flight One Singles
Filippa Ericson won two of her three matches, defeating Sandra Bolstad (Gardner-Webb) 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 and Beth Taylor (Presbyterian College) 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Flight Two Singles
Vale Zarama also won two of her three matches, defeating Sarah Rieckmann (Gardner-Webb) 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 and Brittany Nuttall (Presbyterian College) 7-5, 6-1.
Flight Six Singles
Sarah Parker and Anna Nemeth each defeated Claire Chase (Gardner-Webb). Parker won 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 while Nemeth claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory
Flight One Doubles
Filippa Ericson and Vale Zarama won two of their three matches. Ericson and Zarama defeated Bostad/Mary Walker Mixon (Gardner-Webb) 6-3 and Lydia Yanes Garcia/Helena Kuppig 6-4
Flight Two Doubles
The combination of Carol Sigaki, Eduarda Ferreira and Taylor Dodd teamed up to give Upstate the win in the second doubles flight. Sigaki and Ferreira defeated Catherine White/Mixon (Gardner-Webb) 7-5 while Sigaki and Dodd knocked off Melissa Esguerra/Jayde Viccars (ETSU) 6-4.
Flight Three Doubles
Three freshmen helped the Spartans secure the flight three doubles victory. Taylor Dodd and Sarah Parker teamed up to defeat Claire Chase/Laine Parker (Gardner-Webb) 6-4 and Ana Albertson/Isabela Jovanivic (Austin Peay) 6-4. Parker and Morgan Dodd knocked off Yi Chi Ma (ETSU)/Anne Marie Gourley (Presbyterian College) 6-4.
Upstate returns to action at the ITA Regionals in Raleigh, N.C. on Oct. 20-23.
