Augusta, Ga. – Former USC Upstate men's soccer player Henrik Ronnevig was named this afternoon to the inaugural class of the Peach Belt Conference Hall of Fame as part of its 25th anniversary. Ronnevig is one of 25 former student-athletes, coaches and administrators to be inducted into the recently created Hall of Fame.
The Peach Belt Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 31, at the Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island.
"This inaugural class really demonstrates what makes the Peach Belt Conference so special," said PBC commissioner David Brunk. "You see some of the finest student-athletes to ever play in Division II and a group of coaches and administrators whose talent and dedication have created a conference that has stood among the best in the nation for the past 25 years."
A 2006 inductee into the USC Upstate Athletics Hall of Fame, Ronnevig played a key role in Upstate's dynasty of the 1990's that saw the program compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship game. He is one of only seven men's soccer players to be named All-Conference in each of his four seasons.
Ronnevig scored 54 goals in his career which is still sixth on the PBC's all-time list 16 years following his career. He also remains the conference's all-time leader in assists with 69 and is second in the PBC book in career points. He also holds the Peach Belt record for most matches started in a career with 82.
In 1998, he had 22 assists which remains the single-season PBC record. That year the Spartans advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship Game and a 23-1-0 team record which still stands as the most wins by a PBC team in a single season. In 1997, he led all of NCAA Division II in assists.
A two-time First-Team All-America selection, Ronnevig was named All-Region four times and the PBC Player of the Year in 1998 and 1999. He won three PBC regular-season championships and two PBC Tournament titles in his tenure. Upstate was 68-13-4 during his four seasons.
A four-time PBC Presidential Honor Roll selection, he was named the USC Upstate Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2000. He graduated from USC Upstate in 2001 and returned to his native Norway where he has two sons.
The inaugural class of the Peach Belt Hall of Fame was divided into three categories: Founding Fathers, Student-Athletes, and Coaches & Administrators. Founding Fathers were those whose efforts helped create the Peach Belt in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Thirteen former student-athletes will also be inducted, representing eight of the original 10 championship sports offered by the conference from eight different PBC institutions. Nine former coaches and administrators from nine different PBC institutions will also be inducted.
