
Upstate Ready for 27th A-Sun Women's Golf Championships

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team will make its fourth trip of the season to the state of Florida when it plays in the 27th A-Sun Women's Golf Championships April 10-12 at the par-72, 6,100-yard Reunion Resort Tom Watson Course.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send a five-player lineup into action at the A-Sun Championships with Payton Culler, Sidney Dermody, Allea Hawkins, Malika Allie and Allie Gennaula suiting up for the Spartans. For the second straight season, the A-Sun Women's Golf Championships will be held at the Tom Watson Course after Upstate placed eighth at last year's tournament.
The Spartans tied for 12th place in their last outing April 3-4 at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate in Morganton, N.C. Dermody fired a final round 78 to lead Upstate as she finished tied for 32nd place.
The Spartans are averaging 326.90 strokes for the year, led individually by Culler. Culler is averaging a team-best 79.24 strokes for the season followed by Dermody at 81.50. Hawkins is third at 83.10 and Allie sits fourth with an 84.95 stroke average. Rounding out the lineup for Upstate is Gennaula at 86.43. The Spartans have a best finish of fifth place this season coming at the Seminole State Spring Break.
Upstate is one of seven conference teams battling for the A-Sun Championship this week on the Watson Course. The Spartans enter the tournament as the seventh-best conference school in the latest Golfstat ranking, coming in at No. 233. North Florida (96), Kennesaw State (104), Stetson (139), Florida Gulf Coast (142), Jacksonville (151) and Lipscomb (222) will all compete for the conference title. Kennesaw State won the A-Sun Women's Golf Championship last season.
