Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team spent this past Saturday morning working on a pair of Habitat for Humanity houses on Bon Air Avenue in Spartanburg. It was the first of several community service initiatives planned by the team during the 2016-17 school year.
"It's so important to give back to our community whenever we have the chance. Our players have a great opportunity to play basketball at Upstate and a way to show appreciation is by giving back. We all have different skills and this is a great way for our ladies to learn from each other and communicate. We are grateful to Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg for the opportunity to come out and volunteer."
The team split up into two groups to work on both houses. One group hung siding on the exterior of the house while the other group hung plywood to build exterior walls and did some interior and exterior framing. Players learned how to use a nail and hammer, various saws, wood cutting and measuring.
"Our emphasis this year is to give back to the Spartanburg community," assistant coach Johnette Walker said. "The Habitat experience was new to all of us but as the morning went on our skills improved we were able to get a lot accomplished."
Additional community service plans for the women's basketball team this year include volunteering with Special Olympics, helping out at local elementary schools, American Red Cross cancer awareness runs and the City of Spartanburg Parks and Recreation department.
