Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team hits the road for the first time this season Tuesday evening as it travels to Boone, N.C. to face the Appalachian State Mountaineers at 7 p.m. from Appalachian Soccer Staium.
Upstate improved to 2-1 on the season Saturday evening following a 4-1 victory over Gardner-Webb to conclude a three-game homestand to open the season. Joel Bunting scored the first two goals of his career and dished out his first collegiate assist to lead the Spartans, and was one of three Upstate players to score in the contest. Anson Girone and Lennart Gruetzmacher also scored a goal, while Calon Minors, Victor Borba Labi and Sam Moss tallied one assist each. In goal, Santiago Restrepo earned his second career victory after recording one save.
Appalachian State currently sits at 0-4 overall following a 1-0 loss at Marshall last Saturday. The Mountaineers have also dropped contests to Bowling Green, East Tennessee State and No. 21 Wake Forest. Jordan Melia leads Appalachian State with one goal and two points. Jake Chasteen has made 17 saves in goal this season. The Mountaineers are under the direction of first-year head coach Jason O'Keefe.
The Spartans are looking for their first-ever win in the series as the two teams are meeting for the fourth time in program history. Appalachian State leads the all-time series 1-0-2 and picked up a 3-1 win during the last meeting in Spartanburg back in 2014.
