LakePoint, Ga. – For the second straight season, the USC Upstate men's soccer team has the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year as junior midfielder Cam Philpot received the honor from the conference this afternoon.
Philpot is the third Spartan in program history to be given the award along with Lukas Sommer (2016) and Marvin Schmiege (2014).
Philpot and Sommer were unanimous selections to the All-Academic Team based on their performances both in the classroom and in the playing field this season. Sommer is a two-time selection to the All-Academic Team, joining Schmiege who was selected to the squad in 2013 and 2014.
A native of Auckland, New Zealand, Philpot has a 3.916 grade-point average and is majoring in business administration. Philpot started in all 15 games this season at the midfield position and led the team offensively with 11 points on four goals and three assists. He attempted a team-leading 34 shots and 15 shots on goal. Philpot scored Upstate's first goal of the year less than two minutes into the season-opener at South Carolina, while also registering goals against Liberty, Jacksonville and Gardner-Webb. He dished out assists against Liberty, Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida. Philpot ranks ninth or better for the ASUN in goals, points, shots and shots on goal.
Sommer, a native of Nordwalde, Germany, has compiled a 3.968 grade-point average and is currently majoring in business administration. The 2016 ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Sommer played in 14 games and recorded 13 starts as a defender this season. He played the third-most minutes of any Upstate player at 1,240 minutes. Sommer recorded two points on one goal after scoring the game-winner with six minutes left on a penalty kick against crosstown rival Wofford. He helped anchor a Spartan defense that held N.C. State scoreless in a 0-0 draw on Oct. 10 in Raleigh, N.C.
The All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
