Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team has been rewarded for its performance in the classroom as the Spartans were named a 2016-17 Easton/NFCA Division I All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Upstate was one of two teams in the ASUN this past year to rank in the top-25 coming in at 25th with a grade-point average of 3.496. The Spartans join an elite group of teams that achieved success on both the playing field and in the classroom in 2016-17. The program was one of 35 teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
Upstate has won seven conference championships in the last five years, taking the ASUN Tournament titles in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017, and the ASUN Regular Season championships in 2014, 2015 and 2017. The success has culminated in five consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament from 2013-17, playing in the Tuscaloosa Regional (2013-15), Auburn Regional (2016) and Knoxville Regional (2017).
The NFCA acknowledges the academic proficiency of softball teams within all seven membership divisions. The list includes 149 teams from NCAA Division I programs that maintained a 2.75 grade-point average or higher during the 2016-17 season.
