Spartans Return to Action at USC Upstate Challenge

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team will play its second home tournament of the fall season this weekend as the Spartans host the USC Upstate Challenge on Saturday and Sunday at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate is joined by Gardner-Webb and Austin Peay for the two-day tournament. Upstate and Gardner-Webb open the tournament with singles at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Spartans facing Austin Peay in singles at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Spartans and Austin Peay face off in doubles at 10 a.m. before Upstate wraps up the weekend in doubles play against Gardner-Webb Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
At the WNC Mountain Challenge two weekends ago, Carol Sigaki won all three of her singles matches and won two of three doubles matches with Vale Zarama. Gabriela Cevallos and Elin Hellberg each won two singles matches while Hellberg and Taylor Dodd won two doubles matches together.
The Spartans opened the fall season with 11 match victories at the USC Upstate Invitational on Sept. 15-17. Hellberg won the Black Singles Consolation Bracket and led the Spartans with five total victories.
Upstate continues the fall season on October 19-22 at the ITA Carolinas Regional in Cary, N.C.
