
Upstate Opens Spring Season at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team will open the spring portion of its schedule at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic Sunday-Tuesday on the Osprey Point and Oak Point courses of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Tabbed as the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the 2017 edition of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic has expanded to 43 teams in this year's field and will be played for the third time in its history at Osprey Point at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C.
Upstate will send out a five-player lineup for the three-day tournament including Pan Paksanont, Anna Chanthaphaeng, Payton Culler, Sidney Dermody and Caroline Heustess.
Two courses are used for the three-day, 54-hole tournament including Oak Point. After 36 holes of play, the top 22 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point during the final round, while teams 23-43 will play for a flight championship at Oak Point. Teams will tee off at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday and Monday, and 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Spartans are back on the course for the first time since Oct. 22-23 when they finished seventh at the Winthrop Intercollegiate in Rock Hill, S.C. Upstate had an overall score of 656 during the two-day tournament, while Paksanont and Chanthaphaeng led the Spartans individually as both tied for 16th place. Culler followed in 30th place, while Dermody and Allea Hawkins finished tied for 42nd position.
