
School Record 295 Vaults Upstate to Third Place Finish at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate

Morganton, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team broke a six-year old school record on Monday afternoon after shooting a final round 295 to conclude play at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate in third place from the par 72, 6099-yard Mimosa Hills Country Club.
Upstate moved ahead four spots in the team standings to finish in third with a combined score of 608 (313-295). The final round 295 tied Gardner-Webb for the lowest score of the day and put the Spartans as one of three teams to shoot below a 300 on Monday.
For the second straight day, Upstate had four of its five competitors post rounds in the 70's and each improved on their first round scores by at least two strokes. The Spartans had three players place inside the top-15 and four that finished 20th or better.
Anna Chanthaphaeng and Sidney Dermody tallied rounds of 72 and 73, respectively, to lead Upstate individually at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. Chanthaphaeng (79-72) and Dermody (78-73) both finished tied for 11th place at 151, while Pan Paksanont added a 74 and was one stroke back in a tie for 14th with a two-round score of 152 (78-74). Payton Culler turned in a final round 76 to finish tied for 20th with a 154 (78-76). Allea Hawkins rounded out the standings in a tie for 57th position after contributing an 85 for a two-day 172 (87-85).
Playing as an individual, Marley DeFreitas was unable to complete her final round due to the weather conditions.
Gardner-Webb won the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate by two strokes over Bethune-Cookman at 599. Taylor Dodson of Gardner-Webb took home individual medalist honors after shooting 1-under 143 for the tournament.
The Spartans head to Braselton, Ga. on April 16-18 for the ASUN Women's Golf Championships at the Legends Course at Chateau Elan.
NOTABLES
- The previous school record round for Upstate of 297 was set on Sept. 19, 2011 during the first round of the Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
- The third place performance by the Spartans is their best this season and marks the third straight tournament finishing fourth or better.
- For the first time in school history Upstate has had all players post a tournament round of 79 or better in the spring.
- The Spartans finished higher than five teams ranked ahead of them in the current NCAA Division I Golfstat rankings in Elon, Appalachian State, Winthrop, Western Carolina and High Point.
- The final round 72 turned in by Chanthaphaeng ties her career-low round set previously at the CSU Fall Invitational.
- Dermody, Chanthaphaeng, Paksanont and Culler combined for 17 birdies at the tournament with Dermody tying for sixth among the field with a team-high five.
- Dermody also finished tied for third in par 3 scoring at even-par with a 3.00 stroke average.
- Chanthaphaeng and Culler both had 1-under scores on par 5 holes to go with a 4.88 stroke average.
