Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate cross country team will begin the 2017 season Friday evening as it hosts the 34th running of the Eye Opener Invitational at Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg. It is the first of two meets for Upstate at the Milliken Research Center as the Spartans will close out September by hosting the Upstate Invitational.
The Eye Opener begins at 6:30 p.m. with the women's 5K race followed by the men's 8K race at 7:10 p.m.
Earlier this week, the Spartans were predicted to finish in fourth place in the ASUN men's cross country preseason poll and seventh in the women's poll. Those positions are also where the Spartans finished at the 2016 ASUN Cross Country Championships held at the Milliken Research Center.
Joining the Spartans on Friday will be Anderson, Augusta, Converse (women only), Emmanuel, Lander, Limestone, Presbyterian College, and Wofford. Defending event champion Furman will also compete. In 2016, the men's team finished in third place while the women finished in fifth place.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Winthrop Invitational. The Upstate men's team is the defending team champion of that event.
