Spartans Fall in Regular Season Finale to Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team fell 3-0 to Winthrop University on Saturday afternoon in front of 375 people at the Winthrop Soccer Complex.

The two teams appeared to be evenly matched throughout the first 45 minutes of action. As both teams went up and down the field, testing the other team's defense for any weaknesses. At the end of the half the Spartans had attempted five shots and Winthrop had attempted seven shots in the period.

In the second half Winthrop scored the first goal of the contest in the 52 minute of action. Leah Greene scored off of a pass by Bella Hovis. Moments later Natalie Royaards scored in the 70th minute and Allie Thomas scored in the 71st minute giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage late in the contest.

Logan Pace stood strong in the goal for the Spartans recording 11 saves in the game. This is the fifth time this season Pace had recorded double digit saves in a game. The Tar Heel State native has now recorded 111 saves this season.

Freshman defender Natalie Valaskova led the Spartans offense in both total shots and shots on goal in the match against Winthrop.

Gabi Hull led the Winthrop offense with six total shots and a trio of shots on goal. Ashlynn Harris recorded a single save for the Eagles during the match.
