SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate cross country programs are currently headed to Charlottesville, Va. to participate in the 2019 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships.
It's been two weeks since the cross country programs last competed in a race. Both programs placed sixth at the Big South Championships in Buies creek, N.C. The top runners for USC Upstate have been Jonathan Johnson (New Bern, N.C.) on the men's side and Mia Davis (Tega Cay, S.C.) on the women's side.
Earlier this season Johnson was named the Big South runner of the Week after he recorded his first career top-ten finish at the Eye Opener Invitational. The sophomore completed the course in a time of 26:27.80 and led the Spartans to a second place team finish. Almost a month later Johnson recorded his first top-five finish at the USC Upstate Invitational. The Tar Heel State native ran a personal best 26:01.7 and led the Spartans to a first place victory in the meet.
Davis emerged as the top runner on the women's team this season. The junior had her best outing of the season at the USC Upstate Invite on October 5th. Davis recorded a fourth place finish and ran a personal best 19:10.8 in the five-kilometer rate. The Palmetto State's fourth place finish helped the Spartans clinch a runner-up finish in the event. Earlier in the season Davis recorded a top-15 finish in the Eye Opener Event.
The University of Virginia is hosting the Southeast Regionals for the fourth time in the past five seasons. Last year the regionals were held at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. The Spartan cross country programs ended the race in 30th (men's team) and 33rd (women's team) place respectively. The women's 6-kilometer race will start at 10:30 a.m. followed by the men's 10-kilometer race at 11:30 a.m. Live results of the match can be found at https://www.flashresults.com/2020_Meets/xc/NCAASE/ or you can watch the online pay-per-view event at www.flotrack.org.
