TEMPE, Ariz. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Thursday afternoon, with tennis players Gabriela Cevallos, Elin Hellberg, Maria Jardim, Victoria Saldh and Valeria Zarama all earning Academic Scholar Athlete recognition.
"I was very happy with the way this group of women conducted themselves both on and off the court this year, especially in the classroom," USC Upstate head women's tennis coach Tim McLane said. "This recognition they have received from the ITA is just more proof of their efforts in the classroom this year."
This is the second year in a row the USC Upstate women's tennis team has been recognized by the ITA. Cevallos, Hellberg and Zarama are all second time honorees, having earned the honor of Academic Scholar Athletes last season.
This past season the women's tennis team received the Team Academic Excellence Award at The Sparty's 2019 Awards Banquet. The team earned a 3.51 Grade Point Average (GPA) in the fall and followed it up with a 3.68 GPA in the Spring Semester.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters.
