SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A brand new court redesign will greet USC Upstate Spartan fans in the Eddie and Ann Payne Arena located inside the G.B. Hodge Center during the 2019-20 season as the facility underwent renovations during the month of June.
The newly designed court will be ready for the start of the 2019-20 academic year as the Spartan volleyball program will play the first athletic event on the surface when they face Newberry in an exhibition match on August 24.
"The new court design looks amazing and represents the pride our University has in USC Upstate Athletics," said head volleyball coach Ronda Shirley. "The volleyball program is excited to be the first team to officially open their season on the newly designed court."
The court is outlined in black paint with "Upstate" lettering on one end and "Spartans" on the other. The USC Upstate athletics logo is featured at center court. The lines for the volleyball court will also be featured with gray paint.
"I am very excited about the upcoming 2019-20 season and the newly designed court adds to that excitement," said head men's basketball coach Dave Dickerson. "The design provides a great, new look for our arena and should enhance our gameday experience. #FillTheHodge."
The new design was conceived by the athletics creative team and brought to vision by CourtSports Gym Floor in Camas, Wash. Floor Action, Inc. out of Wilson, N.C. was tasked with sanding and painting the court.
The lane on both ends of the court will feature the Big South Conference logo facing each free throw line. USC Upstate's official Twitter account handle (@UpstateSpartans) and website (www.upstatespartans.com) will be superimposed just over the out-of-bounds line by each bench, offering maximum visibility during broadcasts.
"I am loving the fresh new look of the Hodge," said head women's basketball coach Tammy George. "The lighter wood floor brightens up the Hodge Arena and our USC Upstate logo will help fans and opponents identify with our University. I am excited and looking forward to our fans filling the Hodge for the season and making it a great basketball atmosphere."
This is the first full-court redesign since the G.B. Hodge Center was renovated prior to the 2010-11 academic year.
The court design is among two new features in the Eddie and Ann Payne Arena for 2019-20. New padding has been placed on both ends of the court featuring the USC Upstate athletics logo and wordmarks.
