SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite an overcast day at the Woodfin Ridge Country Club in Inman, the USC Upstate athletic department held a successful Spartan Golf Classic on Friday, October 9 that saw a total of 19 teams and 76 individuals participate. The Spartan Golf Classic is one of two signature events put on by the UClub annually. The UClub helps create transformational opportunities for USC Upstate student-athletes, through scholarships, facility upgrades, NCAA championship experiences and much more.
Â
"This was awesome event and it went really well especially with this being the first time we hosted the event with tee times," USC Upstate head golf coach Todd Lawton said. "With the pandemic we had to adjust…it's so nice to have all the participants out here…to have our teams and sponsors work with us. To have a field that takes up most of the golf course all day is great and speaks to the growth and success of this event over the past few years."
Â
"It brings our community together and lets them see what we have to offer," said USC Upstate softball head coach and tournament participant Chris Hawkins. Â
Â
The Spartan Golf Classic awards prizes for a total of five teams and for the winners of special contests throughout the event. Winners included the pre-round putting contest as well as four closest-to-the-pin contests placed around the course.
This year the team of Alan Newman, Josh Gallman, Kyle Mathis and Charles Brady won the event with a team score of 50. The foursome of Todd Whitehead, Max Fain, Carter Ridgeway and Steven Calicutt finished in second place with a total score of 51. The foursome of Todd Lawton, Nelson Dickson, Lynn Martin and Tyrone Harris placed 3rd, three strokes back.Â
Three other teams were awarded prizes this year, including the foursome representing Blue Cross (Pat Theus, Andy Klein, Doug Fowler and Wayne Fitzgerald), the team from Palmetto Air and Water led by Randy Sanders and the grouping representing Metro B Water & Sewer.Â
Special contest winners include:
Putting contest: Terry Stevenson
Closest-to-the-pin winners: Nick Patel, Fred Bruce, Tyler Comer and Max Fain
