USC Upstate to host virtual auction and annual golf classic in August

Two signature annual events that have helped create transformational opportunities for USC Upstate student-athletes are joining forces this year in response to ongoing concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The USC Upstate Athletic Department and U Club, the athletic scholarship fundraising arm of the USC Upstate Foundation, have announced the dates for Sparty's Auction and the Spartan Golf Classic.

The events will begin digitally with the new virtual #SpartysAuction on Monday, Aug. 10, and continue through the playing of the Spartan Golf Classic presented by Capital Corporation on Friday, Aug. 21. Proceeds from the events will support USC Upstate student-athletes in their pursuit of a top-tier education and competitive success.

"We were all disappointed not to be able to present Sparty's Ball and Auction in person on March 28 as previously planned," said Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Daniel Feig. "As we began to evaluate the future and adjust to the changing landscape with COVID-19, we saw a unique opportunity to mold together portions of the Auction alongside another popular event in the Spartan Golf Classic in August."

"It is possible for us to safely host the golf tournament and keep participants at a safe social distance by making a few modest changes to some of the offerings to ensure we follow the best health practices," Feig added. "We're excited to be able to begin the process of returning to some level of normalcy."

Here's a closer look at the features of each event:

#SpartysAuction to be held virtually August 10-21

The fun begins with a new online #SpartysAuction that will feature a host of unique experiences and items to be unveiled over the course of two weeks, August 10-21.

Auction items will be announced in the days leading up to the culmination event on August 21. #SpartysAuction Mondays (August 10 and 17) are presented by Kapasi Glass Mart while Tuesdays (August 11 and 18) are presented by Vic Bailey Automotive Group. Founders Federal Credit Union will present #SpartysAuction Wednesdays (August 12 and 19) and Contec presents Thursdays auction items on August 13 and 20. Capital Corporation, the presenting sponsor of the Spartan Golf Classic on August 21, will also present #SpartysAuction items for Friday, Aug. 14. A number of special silent auction items will be on display during the Spartan Golf Classic.

Join USC Upstate coaches and administrators for the 19th annual Spartan Golf Classic on Friday, Aug. 21, at the Woodfin Ridge Golf Club, 215 S. Woodfin Ridge Drive, Inman, S.C. USC Upstate and Woodfin Ridge have implemented several operational safeguards to keep participants safe and socially distant amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here's what you need to know:

In lieu of a traditional shotgun start at 1 p.m., teams or individuals will now be allowed to choose a specific tee time spaced over two to three hours beginning at 11:30 a.m. This is to limit gatherings to 10 or fewer players at any one time. Specific times will also be assigned for the driving range and putting green.
Those who may be teaching school-age children virtually or are in need of special accommodations for a tee time may do so by contacting Caleb Poore at 864-503-5144 prior to online registration.
