Volleyball Sinks Pirates to Extend Winning Streak to Three Matches

HAMPTON, Va. – Hitting the road in Big South Conference play for the first time in 2021, USC Upstate volleyball extended its season-long winning streak to three matches behind an all-around effort Friday night at Hampton.
 
The Spartans also carried its no-quit mentality into Friday's match, coming from behind in each of its three set victories en route to its sweep of the Lady Pirates behind scores of 25-22, 26-24, and 25-22.
 
For the second time in Upstate's winning streak, junior right-side hitter Briana Strobert paced the Spartan offense in kills, slamming home 10 kills in the match for her fourth double-figure termination match of the season. Just behind Strobert, sophomore middle blocker Nikki Deslatte collected a season-high nine kills while posting a match-best .438 hitting percentage.
 
Running the offense, senior setter Allie Hamsher passed out 21 assists with sophomore setter Emma McElveen dishing out 14 helpers as Upstate totaled 37 assists in the match. Scooping up eight digs, Hamsher neared her sixth double-double of the year.
 
Also nearing a double-double for the Spartans was senior outside hitter Breeana Gamueda who totaled eight kills and 11 digs in the match, finishing two kills shy of her third double-double of the season. Joining Gamueda with double-figure digs, senior outside hitter Kelly Wiedemann scooped up a team-high 14 digs while senior libero Mackenzie Marcum neared double-digit digs with nine.
 
At the net, Strobert and senior middle blocker Alexis Mareko tallied five total blocks apiece as Mareko extended her streak of matches with five or more total blocks to four.
 
In service, Upstate landed seven service aces, landing seven or more aces for the fourth consecutive match. Hamsher and Marcum led the way with two winners apiece while senior defensive specialist Scout Hoffmeier, Mareko, and Wiedemann each landed an ace.

Upstate continues its road trip Saturday, travelling to Campbell looking to extend its winning streak. First serve is set for 2 p.m. ET.
