Javier Torres Scores Fourth Goal of the Season as Men's Soccer Battles Against No. 25 UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – On the road for the final non-conference match of the 2021 season, USC Upstate men's soccer locked up with its third opponent receiving votes in the national polls this season, facing off against UNC Greensboro Tuesday night.

Despite a goal from redshirt junior forward Javier Torres in the 24th minute—his fourth of the season—off the first career assist from sophomore forward Alex Ljusberg, UNCG's top-ranked offense proved strong, leading the host Spartans to a 7-1 victory.

How It Happened
  • 2' – Taking a feed from Daniel Mangarov just inside the top of the 18-yard box, UNCG's Theo Collomb started the scoring with a left-footed shot that beat a diving Luca Bulfon to the far post.
  • 3' – Beating an Upstate defender to a deflected ball, Mangarov dribbled his way into the box, ultimately getting inside the six-yard box before being swarmed by the Spartan defense. Engulfed in the defense, he was able to just get a piece of the ball to push it across the goal line and extend UNCG's lead.
  • 17' – Getting an early break and the slip on the Upstate backline, Collomb netted his second goal of the match as he settled a long pass from Emmanuel Hagan to his left foot before finishing on the near post.
  • 24' – Receiving a centering ball atop the 18-yard box, Javier Torres put Upstate on the board as he spun around a closing double-team to fire a right-footed rocket towards the post for his fourth goal of the year. Getting a piece of the pass from Leo Vasconcelos that landed at Torres' feet, Alex Ljusberg was credited with his first career assist.
  • 45' – After dispossessing Upstate in its own defensive third, UNCG made quick work of the turnover as Fernando Garcia found teammate Sam Coad in the box with Coad offering a sliding attempt that found its way into the back of the net.
  • 67' – Attempting to clear a cross into the box, an Upstate defender deflected the ball back towards the net with the ball crossing the threshold as a second attempt to clear the arrant ball sent the ball into the net.
  • 71' – Delivering a corner to the far post, UNCG was able to find Myson Darden on the other end as he headed the ball down into the six-yard box where Marco Milanese was waiting for the redirect and the goal.
  • 72' – Pushing the attack after picking the ball off in the midfield near its offensive third, UNCG delivered a ball into the box for Chase Gilley who drove himself toward the left post before having his initial attempt blocked by Bulfon. Extending his right leg past Bulfon following the save, Gilley was able to get just enough of the ball to redirect it into the net for the goal.

Notable
  • Tallying an assist on Torres' 24' goal, sophomore Alex Ljusberg collected his first career assists while tallying the first point of his career.
