How It Happened
First Quarter
- Establishing her presence in the paint early in the contest, Molly Coleman opened the game with back-to-back baskets in the lane. After a South Carolina State basket, Rachael Rose completed a traditional three-point play as she beat the shot clock with a driving layup before converting the and-one to give the Spartans an early 7-2 advantage.
- Seeing their first-quarter advantage trimmed to five, Upstate ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, aided by four made free throws and a Terah Harness jumper over the final four minutes of the period. The Spartan defense was also quite active during the run, swiping three of the team's five first-quarter steals.
Second Quarter
- Remaining active defensively to open the second quarter, Harness and Rose recorded steals on back-to-back South Carolina State possessions to set up an AC Markham three-ball to extend Upstate's lead to its largest—14 points—of the first half.
- Seeing its advantage fall to single digits for the penultimate time in the game with a minute remaining in the half, Harness drained a three to extend the lead back to double digits. Continuing its run to end the half, Rose beat the buzzer with a layup to give Upstate a 5-0 run to close the first half.
Third Quarter
- After trading baskets to open the second half, South Carolina State used a three-pointer from Nadia Reese to trim the Spartan lead to single digits for the final time in the game.
- Kickstarting a run with a driving layup, Rose started an 8-0 run to end the third quarter as Upstate heated up from long range with Harness and Rose following up the initial layup as the Spartan lead grew to 18 behind the team's longest run of the game.
Fourth Quarter
- Following a 4-0 run from South Carolina State to open the quarter, Rose and Harness again helped extend the Spartan advantage as Rose nailed a jumper in the paint before Harness drained a three-ball to push the team's lead to 19 for the first time in the game.
- Turning to the fastbreak and earning a two-on-one opportunity in the final seconds of the game, Jada Logan delivered a perfect pass around a Bulldog defender, finding Takia Davis in the lane for a last-second layup.
Notable
- In just their second career games, freshmen guards Rachael Rose and Terah Harness each posted career nights as Rose set career-highs in points, rebounds, assists, and steals Tuesday night while Harness tallied career-bests in points, rebounds, and steals.
- Dropping 23 points against South Carolina State, Rose became the first Spartan with a 20-point outing since teammate Molly Coleman scored 23 points against High Point in last season's finale. Tuesday's game also marked the first since last season's finale to feature three Spartans scoring in double-figures.
- Swiping 14 steals Tuesday night, Upstate posted its highest theft total since tallying 13 steals against St. Andrews on December 5, 2020. Rose's seven steals are the most for a Spartan since DeNisha Swain swiped seven against Charleston Southern on January 19, 2019.
- Tuesday's scoring margin of 19 points, marks the largest scoring margin over a Division I opponent during the Becky Burke era of Upstate basketball while also representing the second-largest scoring margin (+46 vs. St. Andrews) since Burke took over the program prior to the 2020-21 season.
