Spartans Suffer Setback against High Point

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate volleyball suffered a sweep (12-25, 17-25, 15-25) to the conference leader High Point Thursday night in match one of the back-to-back series.

High Point used a 6-0 run to jump out to a 9-2 lead in the first set before eventually building up to an 18-7 advantage which forced an Upstate timeout. The Spartans came out of the timeout with two straight kills from Briana Strobert and Kelly Wiedemann, but the Panthers went on to score the last five points in the set for a 25-12 win. Wiedemann and Alexi Mareko each had three kills in the first frame.

The Spartans were stronger on the attack in the second set and after High Point got off to a 3-0 lead, Upstate responded with back-to-back kills from Mareko and Strobert. The set went back-and-forth and the Spartans trailed just 11-9 before the Panthers took four straight to gain a 15-9 lead. The Spartans stayed in it however as a kill by Breeana Gamueda cut Upstate's deficit to 21-17, but High Point once against closed things out on a run for a 25-17 win in set two.

Upstate took three straight points to tie things up at 4-4 after a High Point service error followed by a big block from Strobert and Nikki Deslatte and a kill from Wiedemann. Deslatte then swung for a kill before a block solo to give Upstate its first lead of the match at 6-5. High Point would immediately retake the lead and go on to an 8-1 run for a 15-8 lead. Things went back-and-forth after that, but Upstate was never able to climb back in it as High Point took the final set 25-15 to complete the sweep.

Notes

  • Upstate was able to take advantage of eight High Point service errors in the match.
  • Kelly Wiedemann was three kills shy of a double-double as she led the team with a career-high 15 digs on the night.
  • Nikki Deslatte matched Wiedemann for the team-high seven kills.
  • Bruna Avila tied a career-high 23 assists and eight digs in the match.

Upstate will look to bounce back in match two against the Panthers tomorrow at 4 p.m.
