Ashley Finn's Late Goal Pulls Women's Soccer Within One at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – Hitting the road for the first time this season while looking for the team's second win of the season, USC Upstate women's soccer continued a streak of strong second-half efforts, pulling within a goal of host Appalachian State in the final minutes following a halftime deficit.

Sophomore forward Ashley Finn netted her first goal of the season in the match's 87th minute, scoring her third career goal to pull Upstate within a goal during the waning minutes. Using a left-footed shot from atop the 18-yard box, she tucked the ball past Mountaineer goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston as she attempted a post-to-post move for the save.

In goal for the Spartans, junior Haylee Grudzien and sophomore Cora Brendle each played a half, combining for six saves against eight shots on goal. Grudzien finished the match with a lone save while Brendle saved five of six shot on goal attempts against her in the second half.

How It Happened
  • 21' – Appalachian State got the first good look at the goal off a cross from the right side sailed just past the outstretched boot of the Mountaineers' Carly Lantz.
  • 29' – Attempting to gain possession of a loose ball outside the box, the Mountaineers' Audrey Viso received the match's first booking, earning a yellow card after being tangled with Upstate midfielder Nora Vangsnes.
  • 33' – Following a centering pass into the 6-yard box, Appalachian State's Breckyn Monteith found the back of the net, just beating Grudzien who had come off her line to corral the initial pass.
  • 55' – Junior forward Campbell Gibson had a good look at goal as sophomore midfielder Raegan Meyer delivered a cross from left to right towards the back post as Gibson took a right-footed attempt that sailed just wide.
  • 57' – Gibson again was involved in another solid attempt on goal for the Spartans, pacing a counter-attack. Dribbling the ball upfield, Gibson slowed the pace just slightly, flipping the field and finding Vangsnes atop the box to deliver a strike on goal.
  • 58' – Brendle came up with back-to-back crucial saves for the Spartans to hold the match at a one-goal difference. Coming off the right post back towards the center of the goal facing, she made a diving save before recovering to defend the ensuing rebound attempt.
  • 65' – Working against pressure, junior forward Natalie Loyd found Gibson for a shot from the left side, pushing a shot towards the upper-90 on the far post. The shot forced the Mountaineers' Eagleston to make a leaping save to preserve her team's one-goal advantage.
  • 67' – Attempting to win back the ball, Finn was awarded a yellow card for a takedown after being tangled with a Mountaineer defender.
  • 68' – Facing an Appalachian State set-piece, Brendle stood strong against a header from just outside the 6-yard box, plucking a save near the left post.
  • 75' – Appalachian State's Lantz found herself on the receiving end of a cross into the box after earning an assist on the Mountaineers' earlier goal, heading home her goal past a diving Brendle.
  • 87' – Off a free kick just inside midfield, freshman defender Claudia Mendinhas delivered a ball towards the top of the box. After the ball bounced around, Finn gathered the ball to her feet just inside the 18-yard box, firing a left-footed shot, beating Eagleston towards the left post.
