Three Spartans Land Career-Best Service Ace Totals as Upstate Lands 13 Versus High Point

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Turning to its Big South Conference opener, USC Upstate volleyball continued its streak of matches with at least one career-high while also pressuring its opponent in service Friday night against High Point.

The Spartans landed a season-high 13 service aces in the match, eclipsing 12 team service aces in a match for the first time since 2012 as three players, senior setter Allie Hamsher, senior libero Mackenzie Marcum, and senior outside hitter Kelly Wiedemann each tied a career-high with four service aces apiece. In winning the third set, Upstate landed nine of its 13 winners as Marcum, Hamsher, and Wiedemann landed four, three, and two aces, respectively.

Despite applying pressure against High Point in serve/receive, the Spartans dropped Friday night's conference opener in four sets by scores of 21-25, 14-25, 25-13, 15-25.

In addition to the three career-high from Hamsher, Marcum, and Wiedemann, senior middle blocker Alexis Mareko also tallied a career-high with four solo blocks on the evening. For the match, she produced five total blocks as Upstate out-blocked High Point in the match 7.0 to 5.0.

Adding to her career-high ace total, Marcum also led the Spartans with a match-high-tying 12 digs, surpassing 750 digs in her career Friday night. She led a trio with double-digit digs as Wiedemann and Hamsher tallied 11 and 10, respectively.

With a team-high 20 assists in the match, Hamsher tallied her fourth double-double of the year while Wiedemann's team-best 13 kills secured her third double-double of the season. With her double-double, Hamsher hit a pair of career milestones, recording the 600th assists and 250th dig of her Division I career.

Elsewhere in the box score, sophomore setter Emma McElveen added 14 assists in the match with senior outside hitter Breeana Gamueda nearing double-digits with eight kills.
