Women's Soccer Extends Shutout Streak to 375 Minutes Before Succumbing to Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Looking to extend its streak of shutouts and its winning streak to open Big South Conference play, USC Upstate women's soccer fell minutes shy of its goal in its match at Winthrop Saturday night.
 
Holding Winthrop off the board for the first 83:39 minutes of the match, the Spartans extended its scoreless minutes streak to 375:29 dating back to its 0-0 draw at home against Davidson before the Eagles found the net twice in a two-minute span to claim the 2-0 victory.

How It Happened
  • 7' – Firing the first shot of the match to find itself near the frame, Upstate's Nora Vangsnes pushed a shot high from outside the box.
  • 14' – Taking a shot from outside the box, Winthrop's Haley Hocking lofted a shot toward the post, forcing Spartan goalkeeper Cora Brendle to her right for her first save of the evening.
  • 25' – Earning a touch on a free ball following a Spartan corner kick, Raegan Meyer turned and pushed a one-time shot as Winthrop keeper Izzy Giarrizzi made her first save of the match.
  • 27' – Turning and firing a shot from inside the box, Eagle Anna Kate Highsmith's shot landed in the arms of Brendle to negate the Winthrop scoring chance.
  • 62' – Earning a touch inside the box, Spartan Katherine Cunningham rocketed a shot just high of the goal frame.
  • 79' – Following the rebound of her first shot attempt, Upstate's Ashley Finn fired a one-timer at net, forcing Giarrizzi to range to her left for the save.
  • 82' – Off a shot attempt from atop the six-yard box by Winthrop's Erika Brown, Brendle made a diving save towards her left, just off the post to keep the match deadlocked.
  • 84' – Taking a cross at the back post from Jessica Gengler, Highsmith's one-time shot found the back of the net to give Winthrop a 1-0 advantage.
  • 86' – Highsmith returned in the 86th minute with her second goal of the match, shooting across the face of the goal from inside the box, finishing in the bottom left corner.
  • 88' – Facing a penalty shot from Winthrop's Alexandra Perez, Brendle stood her ground for her sixth save of the evening, ranging to her right for the diving save near the post.

  • Keeping Winthrop off the board for the first 83 minutes of the match, USC Upstate pushed its shutout streak to 375:39 minutes, a streak spanning three consecutive shutouts and the match against the Eagles as the streak is the longest such streak in the program's Division I era.
  • With six saves in the match, including a save off a penalty kick, sophomore goalkeeper Cora Brendle has five or more saves in all six of her matches in 2021 and nine of 10 of the matches in her career.
