Chellia Watson Drops 22 Points; Rachael Rose Tallies Double-Double as Women's Basketball Battled High Point Wednesday Night

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Playing the team's first game following an 11-day hiatus, USC Upstate women's basketball saw four double-figure scorers for the second straight Big South Conference game as the Spartans battled High Point Wednesday evening at the G.B. Hodge Center.

Leading the Spartans offensively, redshirt sophomore Chellia Watson tallied her second 20-plus point scoring game of the season, dropping a team-high 22 points against the Panthers. Nearly joining Watson with 20-plus points, freshman guard Rachael Rose tallied her first career double-double with 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

Senior forward Molly Coleman and junior guard Jada Logan each totaled 10 points apiece to round out Upstate's four double-figure scorers with Logan posting nine rebounds, falling just short of a double-double of her own. Scoring in double-figures, the group of Coleman, Logan, Rose, and Watson have scored in double-figures in each of the Spartans' two Big South games.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • After winning the opening tip for the Spartans, Hannah Roberts scored the first five points of the game to give Upstate an early advantage. She opened the scoring with a three from the top of the key on the game's first possession before adding a paint jumper to conclude the run.
  • Trailing 6-2, High Point's Claire Wyatt crafted a personal 4-0 run to force the game's first tie, knocking down a three-pointer before splitting a pair of free throws.
  • Seeing the game tied at 12, High Point used its best scoring run of the quarter, 5-0, to stake a five-point lead heading into the quarter's final two minutes. Over the quarter's final minute, Upstate scored the final three points of the quarter to pull within three at the quarter break.
Second Quarter
  • Quickly tying the game with a three-pointer on the quarter's opening possession, Chellia Watson pushed Upstate's scoring run to six spanning the quarter break.
  • Adding another three and a driving layup, Watson scored Upstate's first eight points of the quarter, outscoring the Panthers 8-2 to claim the Spartans' final lead of the game.
  • Regaining the lead for the final time, High Point hit consecutive threes to pull ahead 28-25 with six-plus minutes remaining in the quarter. Following the consecutive baskets, the two teams traded baskets or free throw conversions, heading into the halftime locker room with High Point leading by four.
Third Quarter
  • Pulling within one coming out of the half, Terah Harness knocked down a three from the corner to start the half's scoring. High Point would subsequently answer with consecutive threes of its own to push the lead to seven.
  • Fighting back to tie the game for the final time, the Spartans used their longest scoring run of the game, seven points, to pull even at 41. Watson kicked off the run with a three with Rose and Coleman adding field goals.
  • Building their lead towards double digits, the Panthers closed the final six minutes of the half, making six field goals, four of which came from beyond the arc to stake a 57-49 lead into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • Hitting its first three field goals of the fourth quarter, Upstate began to chip into High Point's advantage with Rose and Logan making consecutive field goals before Rose converted an and-one opportunity to pull within six.
  • Using a 6-0 run ahead of and following the game's penultimate media timeout, the Panthers pushed their lead to 12—the largest of the game. The Spartans countered with a 5-0 scoring run using a Logan layup and a Watson three to trim the deficit back to single digits.
  • Icing the game, High Point made 10 of 12 free throws over the game's final two minutes, outscoring Upstate by one down the stretch to maintain the 10-point advantage.

Notable
  • Leading Upstate with 22 points Wednesday night, Chellia Watson notched her second 20-plus point scoring effort of the season. She becomes the first Spartan during the 2021-22 season with multiple 20-point outings, adding to her 30-point game against Mars Hill.
  • Scoring 19 points and pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds, Rachael Rose tallied her first career double-double, notching the first Spartan double-double since teammate Jada Logan (10 points, 11 rebounds) against UNC Asheville on Feb. 6, 2021. Logan herself neared a double-double against High Point, posting 10 points and nine rebounds.
  • Scoring in double-figures, Molly Coleman, Logan, Rose, and Watson tallied double-figures for the second consecutive game to open Big South Conference play, marking the first time this season the same combination of Spartans scored in double-figures in consecutive games.
  • With four double-figure scorers Wednesday night, Upstate extended its streak of games with multiple double-figure scorers to 17 consecutive games, including each of the team's 13 games this season.
