Men's Basketball Pushes Winning Streak to Four With Road Win Over Rival Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Hitting the road against another Big South Conference rival Wednesday night, USC Upstate men's basketball didn't let its environment deter it as the Spartans won its fourth consecutive conference game with a 74-61 victory over Gardner-Webb.

Upstate's four-game Big South winning streak marks the longest in conference play for the Spartans since winning five straight in ASUN play during the 2014-15 season. Of the Spartans' four conference wins in 2021-22, three have come on the road, tying for the most conference road victories since joining the Big South in 2018-19.

Notching his second 20-plus point scoring effort of the season, senior forward Bryson Mozone posted his third career double-double, scoring a career-high 23 points and pulling in a game-best 12 rebounds. He finished the game shooting 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the floor and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from beyond the arc.

Joining Mozone in double-figures, freshman guard Jordan Gainey posted his fifth straight game with 15 or more points, dropping 17 Wednesday night while passing out a career-high five assists. Also in double-figures and posting career-high scoring and rebounding totals, junior guard Mysta Goodloe scored 12 points and corralled seven rebounds.

How It Happened
First Half
  • Trailing 5-3 in the opening minutes of the game, Upstate used its first extended scoring run of the game to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game. Getting a three from Bryson Mozone and layups from Josh Aldrich and Jordan Gainey, the Spartans 7-0 run built Upstate a five-point advantage.
  • Coinciding with the Spartans' 7-0 run, Upstate held Gardner-Webb without a field goal for over six minutes of game action. During the stretch, the Spartans outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 12-4 to build a six-point lead.
  • Pushing its lead to double-digits for the first time in the game, Upstate used a 5-0 scoring run behind an Ahmir Langlais layup and three Gainey free throws to run the advantage to 11 points—the Spartans' largest lead of the half.
  • Over the final six minutes of the half, Gardner-Webb outscored Upstate 12-5 to trim the halftime lead to four into the locker room. The Runnin' Bulldogs saw three separate 4-0 runs cut by a Mozone three and a Dalvin White jumper.
Second Half
  • After seeing Mysta Goodloe open the second half with an and-1 conversion, Gardner-Webb used its longest scoring run of the game to erase Upstate's seven-point lead and tie the game at 36.
  • Answering Gardner-Webb's run to force the tie, the Spartans' longest scoring stretch, 12-0, Upstate built its league back to double-digits. Building upon the team's 12-0 run, the Spartans outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 16-3 since the tie to push the lead to 13.
  • Gardner-Webb countered with a 6-0 scoring run to cut into the Upstate lead before Mozone took matters into his own hands, making back-to-back threes to put Upstate back up 13. Overall, the Spartans' scoring run pushed to 10-2, extending Upstate's lead to 15.
  • Continuing to grow its lead, Upstate saw a 5-0 scoring run from the free throw line to push the Spartan lead to 18—the largest of the game. The Spartans scored their final nine points from the free throw line to ice the game.
  • Closing the game's scoring, Gardner-Webb tallied the final five points of the half, cutting Upstate's advantage to 13.

Notable
  • Collecting its fourth consecutive victory in Big South play, USC Upstate secured its longest conference play winning streak since 2014-15. • Scoring a career and game-high 23 points and pulling in a season-high 12 rebounds against Gardner-Webb, Bryson Mozone secured his third career double-double. The double-double marked the first for a Spartan this season and the first since Nevin Zink (20 points; 10 rebounds) on Feb. 27, 2021.
